Public Installations -- Martha Archibald

In a public space, put a modern architectural piece or installation that is designed to be functional, useful, in tune with it's environment, and sensitive to people with safety in mind. Components of importance: safe, more natural (materials and environment), surveillance component.

In terms of implementation:
1.  Present a proposal to HRM with various scale ideas. Offer up designs/ budget upon request.
2.  Install one on our current site (proposal to LL)
3.  Design one for the Spring Garden Road project (the building our new office could potentially relocate to)
4.  Develop a proposal for a project and send to HRM; could be proposing an RFP or design competition request.
5.  Apply for a grant for funds, ie HRM grants for non profit organizations.

Installations ideas:
A.  Design small shelters with seats/ benches for reading, resting, that have recycling area built into the back of the piece, including a bicycle locking place (see attached sketch).
B. Shelter for bicycles that also has a place to shower after riding or after being at the gym or yoga class. Could have a public locker room function.
Could also increase bicycle paths at same time throughout the city.
C.  A public steam room, including components of B.
D. Public building prototype- washroom component. Could have components of B. and C. Smallest installation could be designed as a unisex washroom. Larger installations could be with three watercloset types: M, W, WM- all would be designed universally accessible, to include family wc requirements.
Could use solar hotwater (ie. HRM is planning to install solar HW in 700 +/- residences this year).
Could use green field for sewage treatment (not yet accepted in HRM- could be a prototype as a testing ground to gain acceptance of the idea).
E.  Could include a storage component with D. (buildings could be placed at current or new HRM sport field locations). Nature of storage component would depend on program of the specific area, or that developed as the 'prototype' requirements.
F. An outdoor ampitheater.
G. A fountain- turns into something else in winter?

Other Ideas:

Prototype housing with recycling component built in. Use my house as a design prototype testing ground. CMHC grant?

Spring Garden Road project as a net zero project (the building our new office could potentially relocate to).
